Cardiff Business School and Clifford Thames 'Highly Commended'
At the most recent awards ceremony held on 8th May 2008, Cardiff Business School?s world renowned Centre for Automotive Industry Research and Clifford Thames Limited were 'Highly Commended' for their work in jointly developing a highly innovative way of measuring the full emissions impact of any given car throughout its life from manufacturing through to scrapping and re-cycling.
The model is known as 'Environmental Rating System for Vehicles' (ERV) and was developed by Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis of Cardiff Business School and Clifford Thames's CEO David Riemenschneider and Strategy Director Richard Barber.
ERV goes much further than merely measuring the carbon tail pipe emissions of a given car because it also takes into account other noxious gases as well as the size and weight of the vehicle. Every new car model available for sale in the UK is covered by ERV and allocated a score. The higher the points awarded the better the 'emission' footprint of the vehicle is.
ERV received very widespread international press coverage when it was launched in late 2007 and has been adopted by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association as its preferred environmental rating system. The Association represents buyers of approximately 50% of all new cars registered annually in the UK.
ERV can be accessed via the Clifford Thames website (www.clifford-thames.com) and there is an interactive facility that enables visitors to directly compare one vehicle against another.
